A look of disgust is not one many of us appreciate, but recently one made me happy. Oh it didn’t at first don’t get me wrong. It touched that little vulnerable spot we all have that encourages us to make everyone happy. The comment was about the genre I am currently writing. Bingo! My story isn’t for him. I am not writing for this person. I am writing for people to enjoy to be sure. I mean that is how writers make a living but most importantly, I am writing for ME.
Maybe it is selfish but my writing is mine. No one else can tell a story like I can and no one can tell the stories you have like you. The stories we write are influenced by our own lives and experiences, no matter what. Don’t believe anyone that tells you different. So bring on the tongue emojis because it is my story. If I wrote a genre that I disliked or wrote to please others, my writing would lack heart. It wouldn’t connect with the reader and quite frankly, it would be a waste of time for me and any poor reader that bothered to pick the book up.
There is a tribe out there that wants to devour what I write. I have little doubt. If I am the only one, that is okay too. Writing is my jam and it makes me happy, sometimes in a demented sort of way, but I love the high so I will continue.
As should you! Write for you. Write the genre you enjoy and do what makes you as authentically YOU.
